Train to Teach

Our teacher training programme aims to ‘grow our own’ teachers to work within our local alliance and the region as a whole. Many who have completed their initial teacher training with us remain in our partnership, gaining employment in our schools, coaching others on the course and supporting new entrants to the profession. Many now hold leadership positions in our partner schools and across the region.

Our train to teach completion rate and employment rate have always been consistently above the national average.  

For many, completing the course is often not the end, but just the beginning. Large numbers of trainees access our continuing professional development courses with the support of their employing school through our Teaching School Hub to support their ongoing career development.

We are very proud of our teacher training course. Over 400 people have qualified as teachers since 2012. You could be part of the Arthur Terry SCITT family too!

Our train to teach programme is at the forefront of ITT, with a focus on subject-specific pedagogy, cognitive science and opportunities to rehearse before entering the classroom. We have designed the course to give you all the basics in the first term, building up your teaching timetable gradually as your confidence increases. 

There are lots of opportunities to strategically observe expert colleagues both live and online, before practising strategies in the classroom yourself. Our ITT programme is highly personalised and provides the chance to focus on specific elements of teaching term by term, culminating in successful achievement of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). 

We focus on your personal development, effective management of workload and well-being. Everything you need is provided through one online platform, evidence is collected cumulatively over the year, with your best practice explored in discussion with members of the team each term. We don’t expect large folders of paper-based evidence. What we do expect is reflective practice and continual evaluation of how your teaching impacts on the students you work with.
