Deliberate Practice Guide
Friday 4th April, 2025

Today, we share a new resource from the Arthur Terry Teaching School Hub to support effective deliberate practice. This resource is free to all.
Building on our work in ITT mentor training, we have developed this resource to support Learning Coaches who work with Associate Teachers on our SCITT courses.
Arthur Terry SCITT is an outstanding initial teacher training provider. You can read about our SCITT courses and apply here:
What’s in the guide?
The guide is intended to be a supportive tool for coaches to use while planning and delivering lesson feedback. Built around the characteristics of effective deliberate practice from Deans for Impact, it offers a step by step approach to rehearsal that really changes teachers’ practice.
Inside you will find:
- Brief context around what deliberate practice is and why it’s important
- ‘Deliberate Practice Steps to Success’ A step by step graphic to support coaches
- Examples of activities that could be used when delivering feedback
- Worked examples of the Steps to Success
You can read the full guide by clicking the button below.
Deliberate Practice Steps to Success

By breaking down the rehearsal phase into bitezise chunks, we aim to support high-quality deliberate practice and feedback. No matter what context you are coaching in, you are welcome to use this resource.
Although it is intended for our SCITT Learning Coaches, this resource is free to all and we encourage you to use these ideas and approaches in your own practice.
