Appropriate Body Newsletter
Monday 11th November, 2024
This update is for schools and induction tutors, containing information and guidance related to supporting and assessing ECTs and ensuring they receive their statutory entitlements. In this edition:
Thank you for registering your Early Career Teachers (ECTs) with us as your Appropriate Body (AB), we hope that the following information will assist you in supporting your ECTs.
Progress Reviews & Assessments
For those schools who are new to the Arthur Terry Teaching School Hub, Appropriate Body. We DO NOT require that evidence is uploaded into the Documents Folder on ECT Manager for Progress Reviews and Assessments but that specific evidence related to the ECT’s practice is included in Progress Reviews & Assessments.
It is acceptable for the mentor and ECT to be involved in drafting out Progress Reviews and formal assessments but the Induction Tutor must be the final editor of what is submitted.
Please reference the sample Progress Reviews and Assessments under Resources on ECT Manager before completing these for your ECTs.
The following dates have been set for Progress Reviews and Assessments to be submitted on ECT Manager. ECTs who start midterm or have an extended ECT induction will have a personalised submission date:
Autumn Term: Friday 6th December 2024
Spring Term: Friday 28th March 2025
Summer Term: Friday 27th June 2025
This video is a walk through on completing the Progress Review on ECT Manager.
According to the DfE Guidance for ECTs these meetings should be conducted by the Induction Tutor or Headteacher and not the mentor unless the mentor is the Induction Tutor.
Compliance school visits & telephone calls
The DfE have given Appropriate Bodies two key roles. The:
- Monitoring of support – Appropriate Bodies will check that early career teachers are receiving their statutory entitlements, and to provide ECF fidelity checks, ensuring schools are supported to provide ECTs with an ECF-based induction.
- Monitoring of assessment – Appropriate Bodies will make the final decision as to whether the ECT has satisfactorily met the Teachers’ Standards, based on the Headteacher’s recommendation.
We are endeavouring to contact as many schools as possible who are enrolled with us as Appropriate Bodies to make compliance checks. The purpose of this is to ensure that all the statutory requirements for your Early Career Teachers are in place, answer any queries you may have and provide any further support you may need.
ECTs not on track
Please keep us up to date on serious concerns you have regarding the progress of your ECT.
If an ECT is assessed as not on track on Progress Reviews or as not making satisfactory progress against the Teachers’ Standards for the Formal Assessment 1, we will contact the school early the next term to discuss concerns in relation to the Teachers’ Standards. For some ECTs a structured support action plan over a term is enough to help them get back on track.
For a small number of ECTs further support is required. Please contact us, the Appropriate Body, if you require advice regarding an ECT not on track. We are happy to arrange a call and visit if required.
Changes to ECTs circumstances
Please keep us informed of changes in the circumstances of your ECTs. For example, if your ECT is changing schools, is on long term sick leave, will be taking maternity leave, has resigned etc.
Appropriate Body or ECF Provider?
There has been some confusion over who to contact regarding an ECT.
