Teacher Subject Specialist Training (TSST)
The Arthur Terry National Teaching School works in partnerships with the National Forest Teaching School to deliver Teacher Subject Specialism Training in MFL and Maths.
These programmes offer an opportunity for those who have a teaching qualification but are not currently teaching a subject in which there is a national shortage to develop their subject knowledge and pedagogy to enable them to teach the shortage subject to GCSE. The certificate that is awarded at the end of the year by The National Forest Teaching School and The Arthur Terry National Teaching School, in conjunction with the DfE, states that you have completed a programme which will enable you to teach the shortage subject to GCSE.
There is also an opportunity for participants to gain 30 Masters level credits towards the Masters in Teaching and Learning through Birmingham City University, although completing this element is not a condition of gaining the certificate.
The MFL TSST courses offers participants an opportunity to develop both their subject knowledge of French or Spanish alongside their understanding of MFL pedagogy.
The course comprises two distinct parts; 6 x 90-minute subject pedagogy sessions led by an MFL SLE and 6 x 90-minute French or Spanish subject knowledge development sessions led by experienced MFL teachers. All sessions will start at 3.45pm – 5.15pm and will be delivered virtually by facilitators from the Arthur Terry Teaching School alliance.

This course is exactly what I’ve always hoped for and I can’t recommend it enough! The course was well-planned and the facilitator is clearly an experienced and knowledgeable instructor who won my respect straight. I loved the sense of academic rigour that underpinned all the sessions and could tell everything was well-researched and free of gimmicks. It was really enjoyable to have someone to truly instruct me and leave me with solid concepts and specific strategies and activities that I can use in the classroom to improve my practice.TSST Spanish Participant 19-20
